Nigeria turns to CNG as petrol prices hike

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles are gaining traction in Nigeria as the government and private sector push for cleaner and more affordable fuel alternatives. Under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), over 100,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG, with a goal to convert one million vehicles within three years. The program has increased the number of conversion centers from seven to over 140, creating thousands of jobs and attracting significant private investment totaling over $200 million.

The Nigerian government has also mandated that all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) procure only CNG-powered vehicles, signaling a robust commitment to energy diversification and sustainability. This policy aligns with broader strategies to reduce dependency on traditional fuels, decrease transportation costs, and lower emissions. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish industrial parks for the production of CNG vehicle kits and components, reducing reliance on imports and boosting local manufacturing.

CNG vehicles offer economic benefits, including up to 60% savings on fuel costs and reduced engine maintenance expenses. This transition represents a significant step toward leveraging Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves to enhance energy security and support sustainable development.
